SABATTUS – Sabattus Pond swimmers and fishermen will soon have to travel shorter distances to get their hands on a bite to eat during the summer.

Selectmen Wednesday night OK’d a bid by Erin Tolman and her family to set up a hot dog stand at the Martin’s Point boat launch. Diggity’s Dogs will be open on weekends.

“I’m a marketing major at Thomas College,” Tolman said. “This helps pay tuition.”

The opening is slated for the weekend of June 3. Town officials said she can pencil in all weekends through Sept. 3, when she heads back to college.

“The plan is to start off with hot dogs and fried onions,” she said. “But we have hot and cold compartments so we can cook corn and store drinks and lobster subs as well.”

When not at Martin’s Point, Diggity’s Dogs sets up at the Lisbon Street Dollar Tree parking lot during the work week. Her parents purchased the stand as a way to help their children become entrepreneurs.

Not having a license policy for such a business, selectmen waived a fee as long as the fire chief inspects the family’s operation before it opens.
