RUMFORD – Sundown Squadron, connected with Cumberland County Composite Squadron, based out of Portland, has been active recently.

Sundown cadets visited the Portland International Jetport, the Cumberland County meeting place, where they toured the air traffic control tower and the jetport fire station, which they found much different than a normal fire station.

Two cadets also had the opportunity to take orientation flights, taking the controls of a standard Cessna 172 or 182.

The cadets also participated in search and rescue exercises. The events help increase radio communication and flight line skills.

Sundown will participate in the state rocketry competition in Bangor. Rockets are judged in three categories: altitude, distance and accuracy to a target.

Sundown was also involved in hosting a chili chow-down on May 25 to benefit Homes for Our Troops, which builds and customizes homes for soldiers with disabilities who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Sundown Squadron meets from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the Rumford American Legion. Anyone who would like to join or who would like more information may attend a meeting or call First Lt. Barbara Arsenault at 562-7783.
