BROWNFIELD – Two young men have been arrested in connection with the theft of thousands of dollars from a Brownfield home.

State police arrested Donald D. McMahon, 18, of Brownfield on Friday on charges of burglary and stealing medical drugs from his uncle’s house on Thursday, State Trooper Adam Fillebrown said Monday.

Andrew A. Distasio, 22, of Stow was arrested Saturday on charges of theft and burglary.

Fillebrown said Herbert Rollins of Hampshire Road in Brownfield reported a break-in when he returned home Friday, telling police that a safe with $7,000 in it and an envelope containing another $2,400 were missing from his house.

Rollins had just mortgaged his home, Fillebrown said, and had locked the $7,000 in a safe kept in his bedroom. The envelope held cash belonging to Rollins’ son. Fillebrown said he did not know where that money came from.

Rollins had been away, and the house was unlocked. Police believe burglars entered the home Thursday, grabbing the safe and the drugs Oxycodone and Klonopin.

Because the uncle suspected his nephew, police zeroed in on McMahon. Fillebrown said fingerprints taken from the scene are being analyzed.

The money has not been found, but Fillebrown said more investigation today could lead to the discovery of stolen items.

McMahon’s bail was set at $100 cash by a court judge Monday, and he was still in jail Monday evening. Distasio posted $5,000 unsecured bail and was released, according to a jail official.
