LEEDS – Barb and Russ Angell, owners of BJ’s Dairy Treat, recently celebrated their 20th anniversary. BJ’s opened on April 28, 1986, when the Angells, along with Russ’s parents Barbara and Richard Angell, purchased what was then called Fran’s Dairy Treat at 1459 Sabattus St. in Lewiston. In 1995, Barb and Russ bought his parents’ half of the business so Barbara and Richard could pursue their cottage business “Angell Cove Cottages” on Androscoggin Lake.
In 1991, the Angells opened Northland Dairy Treat on Route 4 in Turner, and five years ago they purchased the former Cote’s Ice Cream on Main St. in Lewiston and reopened it as Main Street Dairy Treat. All three locations offer the Angells’ hard-serve ice cream that is made at the BJ’s location, in addition to several soft serve flavors along with a no-fat, no-sugar yogurt.
