PORTLAND – Kathryn Kazenski of Scarborough was called home by The Lord on May 21, at Maine Medical Center.

She was born May 22, 1936, to Lyle and Christine DeVilbiss in Baltimore, Md. In 1954 she graduated from Milford High School then earned her BS from Towson State Teachers College (now Towson University) in 1958. For two years she taught sixth grade at Featherbed Lane Elementary School.

Married on June 8, 1960 she moved with her husband to Hawaii taught school and gave birth to a daughter in 1962. The U.S. Army moved them to Harrisburg, Pa., where a son was born in 1964, then to Fort Belvoir, Va. Returning to civilian life they moved to Cherry Hill, N.J., where she taught school and played a leadership role in volunteer development and fundraising for the Camden County United Cerebral Palsy Center.

After arriving in Cape Elizabeth in November 1973, she earned two Masters degrees in the Special Education field at USM, taught at Longfellow School in Portland and then served as assistant special education director in Lewiston until she retired in September 1999.

She kept busy professionally in retirement by assisting the Gorham School Department with planning programs and arranging services for special needs children, serving on the Long Creek Youth Center (Education) Policy Committee, The Muskie School Work Group for Community Based Living (for all disabled) and the Cumberland County Case Review Committee (for children with unmet special services requirements.)

She was devoted to making education work for all children and providing services that would enhance their quality of life. Her colleagues and friends found her to be warm, pleasant and perceptive.

She was an active participant in Senior Voices, Senior Series and TRIAD in Scarborough.

Her hobbies included reading, crossword and jig saw puzzles, collecting dolls and gardening.

She derived great satisfaction participating in many of her grandchildren’s school and extra-curricular activities. She was very proud of them.

She is survived by her husband, Jack and son, John who reside in Scarborough; a daughter, Regina who resides in Cape Elizabeth with her husband, Richard; sons, Michael, Nicholas and Jake; a brother, Bud who resides in Cooksville, Md.
