BRUNSWICK (AP) – Police on Wednesday recovered a car taken from former Gov. Angus King’s driveway less than a mile from where it was stolen.

The red 1990 Mazda Miata convertible was recovered after a local woman who had seen news reports of the theft saw it in a vacant lot behind an apartment building in Brunswick near King’s home.

Police said they recovered evidence from the car and returned it to King’s wife, Mary Herman.

The car was stolen from the driveway while King and Herman were asleep, police said. The car was unlocked and the keys were left inside.

King, an independent, was governor from 1995 to 2003.
