NORWAY – Beacon Hospice volunteers were honored recently at the Heywood Club. The recognition ceremony included refreshments prepared by volunteer Evie Marshall and a cake provided by Beacon Hospice featuring its lighthouse logo in royal blue.

Each volunteer received a pin signifying their first 100 hours of service to Beacon Hospice patients in the Norway, South Paris and Bridgton areas. In addition, they received a copy of the book, “Beacon of Light, A Journey of Hope and Discovery.”

The evening included an informational session about Deep Harbors, a program developed by Beacon Hospice to address the special needs of patients who have end-stage dementia.

The volunteers were instructed on how to best use specific interventions to create a soothing environment and ease the anxiety that sometimes accompanies dementia.

“Volunteers truly are the heart of hospice,” said Elizabeth Herrick, volunteer coordinator for Beacon. “They serve because they want to be a source of support and comfort to the patient and the family during a difficult time. Hospice volunteers represent humanity at its best.”
