CARATUNK (AP) – State police Wednesday charged a 25-year-old man with murder, a day after the death of his mother in their home along U.S. 201 in this northern Somerset County town.

William Bruce was arrested at the South Portland Police Department, where he had been taken for questioning Tuesday night about the death of Amy Bruce, spokesman Stephen McCausland of the Maine Public Safety Department said. The 47-year-old woman’s body was found late Tuesday afternoon in her home by her husband, Robert Bruce.

William Bruce was in Cumberland County Jail in Portland on Wednesday and was scheduled to make his initial court appearance this morning in Cumberland County Superior Court.

An autopsy on Amy Bruce’s body was conducted Wednesday by the State Medical Examiner’s Office, which declared the death of Amy Bruce a homicide but did not release the cause of death.

State police detectives remained at the Bruce farmhouse in Caratunk gathering evidence Wednesday, and were expected to return Thursday to finish their work.

After discovering his wife’s body, Robert Bruce called the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department, which sent deputies and state police detectives to the residence where the Bruces lived with their son. Police said William Bruce was located Tuesday night in South Portland.
