poland – A Poland Spring man was seriously injured Sunday night when he lost control of his golf cart and slammed into a wall of rocks.

An Androscoggin County Sheriff’s deputy said 36-year-old Eric Meyers of Skellinger Road suffered head and other injuries when he crashed at about 7 p.m.

Deputy Thomas J. Slivinski said Meyers was riding his unregistered golf cart east on Skellinger Road when he reached down to retrieve an item that had fallen to the floor of his cart.

Slivinski said the golf cart became caught in the soft shoulder, slid off the roadway, and crashed into a pile of rocks that were once part of an old dock at Middle Range Pond.

LifeFlight Helicopter was called by emergency paramedics but treacherous weather prevented the craft from responding, police said.

Meyers was transported by Poland Rescue with assistance by United Ambulance paramedics to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

He was listed in serious condition there late Sunday night. His condition was upgraded to stable by Monday night, according to a nursing supervisor.

Police remained at the crash scene late into Sunday night reconstructing the wreck.

Sheriff’s officers on Monday were reminding people that anybody caught operating a golf cart on public roadways will likely face prosecution under motor vehicle laws.

“In some areas of the town, there is a misunderstanding among residents who believe that it is completely legal for the operation of golf carts on the public roadways,” Slivinski said.
