AUBURN – In observance of Hunger Awareness Day, Christian Motorcyclist Association bikers joined for the third annual Ride Against Hunger to benefit Good Shepherd Food-Bank.

A total of 38 bikers assembled at L-A Harley on June 3 where they began a mystery ride ending at the food bank for a barbecue.

Food bank spokeswoman JoAn Chartier said, “It was truly inspiring to see bikers come out in support of Good Shepherd Food-Bank, despite the heavy rain that day. Some came in cars, showing their commitment to helping our cause.”

The group raised more than $900. Considering that every dollar donated equates to more than $12.50 in retail value of food, the donation will allow the agency to provide more than $11,000 in food to hungry and needy people in our communities.

“Summer brings new challenges for us at the food bank,” said Chartier. “Maine has more than 69,000 kids receiving free or reduced lunches at school. During the summer months, agencies and soup kitchens report increased needs and more kids being served. Many agencies help by providing summer lunches in parks, and underprivileged kids camps are opening up. This donation will certainly help make a difference.”
