PRESQUE ISLE (AP) – The chief of the Aroostook Band of Micmacs has been suspended as dozens of tribal members call for his ouster.
William Phillips, who has served as chief for seven years, has been accused of failing to show up for work regularly. Critics in the 1,000-member tribe also say he has been involved in a misuse of tribal funds.
Acting Chief Katie Espling said Phillips will remain suspended without until he can defend himself at community meeting later this month. The suspension came after he failed to show up for work a day after being directed to do so.
Tribal members gathered 100 petitions calling for Phillips’ immediate ouster but the nine-member tribal council chose not do so.
Instead, the council appointed an investigative committee that will present its findings at the community meeting on July 30. At the time, Phillips will be given an opportunity to present his position, Espling said.
