SABATTUS – Sabattus Primary and Central School children celebrated Flag Day for the 11th year, under the guidance to teacher Diane Whalen.

The primary school program kicked off with a parade led by Uncle Sam marching to “Stars and Stripes.” The second-graders presented the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance, then the pledge was recited by all.

The first-graders presented a Readers Theater, “The Stars and Stripes Speak Out.” A flag-folding demonstration was given by members of American Legion Post 135, assisted by the children. Awards were also presented to some of the children for their exceptional Flag Day projects. The program at the primary school ended with several patriotic songs.

The program resumed at the central school with the third- and fourth-grade attending. The program began with a choral reading of the Pledge of Allegiance, which was then recited by all. The national anthem was sung and the fourth-graders made a presentation regarding the flag.

Next came the retirement of American flags that were beyond use. With the children’s help, they were properly disposed of by the American Legion Post 135 and the Sabattus Fire Department.

An awards ceremony took place after when first-place winners read their essays on “What the Flag Means to Me.” Patriotic songs closed the ceremony.
