PORTLAND (AP) – Jesus Merchan drove in six runs with a double and a triple and Allen Davis pitched five strong innings to lead the Reading Phillies past the Portland Sea Dogs 10-6 Wednesday in the Eastern League.
Pedro Swann and Peter Bergeron also doubled in Reading’s 13-hit attack. Dusty Brown homered, doubled and drove in three runs for theSea Dogs.
Leading 2-1 through five innings, the Phillies (49-53) surged ahead when Merchan’s bases-loaded double made it 5-1 in the sixth. His three-run triple closed Reading’s scoring in the ninth.
The Sea Dogs (57-46) tallied two runs on solo homers: Brown’s in the second and David Bacani’s in the seventh. Brown hit a two-run double in the eighth, and Zach Borowiak’s leadoff double added two Portland runs in the ninth.
Davis (3-5) allowed one run on four hits over five innings. Portland starter Luis Mendoza (1-5) took the loss.
