LEWISTON – A memorial for Sarge, one of the city’s first police dogs, will be held Aug. 9.
Sarge died earlier this month. He was 10 and had cancer.
The German shepherd joined Lewiston’s first K-9 unit when he was 2. He served for over seven years with officer Timothy Morin, hunting down criminals, finding missing people and sniffing out drugs. Although Sarge was an intense police dog who could frighten even hardened criminals, he was also a gentle family pet who served as a kind of mascot for the police department. He helped teach schoolchildren about safety, he walked in local parades and he once added his paw print to a state bill that helped get bulletproof vests for Maine police dogs.
Sarge’s memorial service will begin at 3 p.m. in City Council chambers at City Hall. Police officials are expected to speak, and Sarge’s handler will share pictures and cards that Sarge received over the years from school children.
