LEWISTON – Staff and volunteers of the St. Martin’s Bargain Basket, corner of College and Bartlett streets, have announced an open house on Friday, Saturday and Monday, Aug. 4, 5 and 7, to celebrate the first anniversary of the opening of the thrift shop. There will be light refreshments, a door prize and dollar bargains.

The opening a year ago was made possible by a group of volunteers who saw a need and found a way to support that need with the thrift store.

With the need for funds a constant battle at St. Martin de Porres Residence for homeless men and women, the volunteers gathered in the summer of 2005 and discussed the possibility of starting a new venture. The board of directors granted permission to open a thrift shop.

Since space was already available for the distribution of clothing, all it required was a little sprucing up. It took several months, work and volunteer hours and on Aug. 1, 2005, St. Martin’s Bargain Basket opened its doors to the public.

The store is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Friday, 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Clothing, jewelry, household items, linens and other items are donated and are available to the public.
