LEWISTON – Mayor Lionel C. Guay Jr. recognized Lewiston High School student Cassandra Jensen for receiving the governor’s designation as a “2006 Young Writer of the Year” on July 25 at a Lewiston City Council meeting. Jensen and two other students were selected.
Jensen was picked by authors Richard Russo, Linda Greenlaw and Wesley McNair, who served as judges for the Maine Community College System’s “A Journey into Writing,” a statewide contest open to all Maine high school juniors. Competition included 214 high school juniors from 74 Maine high schools who submitted short stories, essays and poems.
Jensen was selected due to the content of her short story, “Nomenclature,” and she joined Gov. John E. Baldacci, First Lady Karen Baldacci, Education Commissioner Susan Gendron and sponsors of the contest at a luncheon ceremony on May 31.
Upon hearing of the council recognition, Karen Hamilton, publications and marketing coordinator for the Maine Community College System, said, “What a wonderful honor for Cassandra.”
