PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) – There is a silver lining in the dark clouds that helped damage a historic church steeple.

A storm blew the spire off the steeple at the North Church last week, setting back a restoration project, but prompting about $100,000 in new contributions for the project.

Phil Pettis, who heads fundraising for the church, said insurance will pay to replace the damaged spire, and the new contributions will help with continuing restoration at the Market Square landmark.

Even Gov. John Lynch is pitching in. He held a news conference in Portsmouth on Wednesday urging people to join him in contribution to the restoration fund.
