LEWISTON – A soldier from Wiscasset has been killed in combat in Afghanistan, according to Gov. John Baldacci.

Pfc. Andrew Small, 19, was killed during hostile fire, the governor said in a statement. Small served in the Army’s 10th Mountain Division out of Fort Drum, N.Y.

Baldacci said he spoke with Small’s family Saturday morning to offer his condolences.

No other details, including the day of the fatality, were available, Baldacci said.

U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe issued a press release Saturday night expressing her thoughts.

“Andrew Small made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his nation fighting in Afghanistan. His selfless commitment to his country will never be forgotten,” Snowe said. “My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends, family and loved ones during this most difficult time.”
