WOODSTOCK – Selectmen on Tuesday decided unanimously to order this year’s winter sand from R.A. Tibbetts Excavation of Wilton for $7 per cubic yard, the same price that was paid Tibbetts last year.

Introducing the offer, Town Manager and Road Commissioner Vern Maxfield told the board he was surprised with the offer since most costs, especially fuel costs, have risen drastically since 2005. He had expected the town would be looking at higher sand prices this year.

He said the purchase is usually put out to bid, “but I don’t believe we will be getting a better offer from anyone else.”

Selectmen agreed with Selectman Victor Young saying, “I am surprised and if he is willing to give us the same price as last year I think we will be wise to accept his offer.”

Maxfield said he expects to order 2,500 cubic yards with a final bill from Tibbetts of $49,000.

“This is early to be thinking about winter sand,” said Maxfield, “but we really would be making a mistake if we ignored an offer of sand at last year’s price.”

In other business, Maxfield told the board that work on Old County Road is well under way with the two sections being reclaimed already ground and graded. They will be repaved before the end of this week.

The reclaiming involves rebuilding 4,300 feet of roadway and repaving for a total cost of $62,000.

The project is being done by Pike Industries of Waterford with the town highway crew handling the ditching and shoulder work once the paving is complete.
