FAIRFIELD – One week after torching the Cony defense, Edward Little’s offense more than met its match Friday night.

For the Lawrence High School defense, it was business as usual.

The Bulldogs held the Red Eddies to just 43 total yards on offense and pitched a shutout for the second week in a row, upending the Red Eddies 22-0.

“Our game is pretty much all on defense,” said Lawrence senior linebacker David Wallace. “We’re a defense-first team, and then our offense is really kicking it in, too. We’re just pounding the ball every play. That’s how we’re going to win this season.”

The Eddies managed just three first downs all game, and their only possession on the Lawrence side of the 50-yard-line came in the third quarter on a fumble recovery.

“We thought we had them scouted, but then they put nine guys in the box, and I wasn’t able to make the appropriate adjustments in time,” said EL coach Darren Hartley.

Defensively, Hartley thought Edward Little played well despite the exhaustion that inevitably set in late in the game due to being over-worked.

“I thought we played as consistently as we could on defense,” said Hartley. “Our team speed shows on defense, but I suspect that part of the reason we still couldn’t get it done in the second half offensively is that we expired ourselves on defense.”

On offense, EL couldn’t move the ball. Its largest run from scrimmage was a 9-yard run by Ricky Chamness in the second quarter. Quarterback Troy Barnies had two completions that also went for nine yards each.

“We were keying on the reads on the runs around end and on the quarterback,” said Wallace. “He’s a pretty good threat, but we got that all down tonight.”

“We felt they had a lot of weapons after what we saw last week,” said Lawrence coach John Hersom. “We knew we needed to focus on what they like to do with those kids.”

On the offensive side of things, Wallace and Isaiah Underwood provided most of the muscle the Bulldogs would need. Wallace bulldozed his way for 54 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries, while Underwood ran the ball eight times for 23 yards. Aaron Champagne picked his way for 78 yards rushing on 15 carries to lead all rushers.

In all, eight Lawrence backs carried the ball, while quarterback Jack Hersom was 3-for-7 for 28 yards, all in the first half. Jack Hersom also ran for two of the Bulldogs’ three touchdowns, and Mark Ashland made one of the three field goals he attempted, a 26-yard boot in the second quarter.
