LOWELL, Mass. (AP) – Scott Gomez led a New Jersey power-play assault with a goal and two assists, leading the Devils to a 5-0 victory Sunday over the Boston Bruins in the preseason opener.

Defenseman Johnny Oduya had three assists in a game that marked the debuts of former Montreal coach Claude Julien with the Devils and ex-Detroit coach Dave Lewis with the Bruins.

Barry Tallackson and Gomez scored in the first period and Jamie Langenbrunner and Mike Rupp connected in the second. Gomez assisted on goals by Tallackson and Langenbrunner.

The Bruins couldn’t stay out of the penalty box in the first two periods. The Devils had four power-play goals in 11 chances. Boston goalie Hannu Toivonen yielded four goals on 26 shots in his two periods.

Zach Parise closed the scoring at 13:07 of the third period, the only goal at even strength.

Goalie Scott Clemmensen, one of several Devils in camp without a contract, kept the Bruins scoreless for the first 30:12.

The Bruins elected not to play their marquee free-agent signings – defenseman Zdeno Chara, center Marc Savard and first-round draft pick Phil Kessel.

The Devils, the parent team of the AHL Lowell Devils affiliate, were the home team in a game played 30 miles from Boston.
