LEWISTON – Over the past several months, social service agencies have been meeting to discuss the lack of after-school programs for middle and high school students if they are not involved in sports.
In response to the need, the YWCA of Central Maine has developed an after-school program for teens in connection with Glenn Atkins, a certified personal trainer and aerobics instructor. The programs will be held at 3 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the YWCA of Central Maine, 130 East Ave.
“We would like to offer several programs throughout the school year, and possibly even over the summer months,” said Anne Craigs, YWCA executive director. “We are beginning with these aerobic and dance programs this fall and hope to expand programs based upon interest from participants.”
Four programs are being offered between September and December. The first is extensive abdominal training for athletes who need to work on their conditioning for winter sports. It starts on Monday, Sept. 18.
The second is a cardio-funk jam session that combines cardio workout with hip hop style. It will begin on Oct. 16. The third is cardio-kickboxing, which will begin Nov. 6, and the fourth session is Straight Out Funk on Dec. 4. It is hip hop dance. Participants can register for all sessions at once or one at a time. No prerequisite classes are necessary.
For more information about the classes, registration and membership at the YWCA, call 795-4050 or visit the YWCA at 130 East Ave.
Cost to members of the YWCA is $1 a class; non-members, $8 a class. Bring gym shorts, T-shirt and non-marking sneakers. Membership at the YWCA is open to all. Visit www.ywcamaine.org for more information. All participants are welcome to use the locker room and shower facilities at the conclusion of the workout session.
