When Walter L. Maine and Col. Cummins’ combined circus and Wild West Show exhibited in this city early in the summer all agreed that the best feature of the entire show was the daring bronco riding by the cowboys. One of the riders, a young man, tall, dark and although not heavy possessing a fine athletic bearing, attracted many by his dare devil work. The fellow was Robert Seavey Owen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert P. Owen of East Avenue, Lewiston, who is now visiting at his home. It was six years ago that Owen who is known to his friends as “Bob” left Lewiston with Joseph Harris who is now also making good in the profession.

50 Years Ago, 1956

Androscoggin County upland game hunters can look forward to good shooting prospects with some 2,500 of the splendid birds available in cover throughout this area, according to a report issued by Emery Fournier, chairman of the Androscoggin County Fish and Game Association Pheasant Stocking Committee.

Chairman Fournier’s figures show 1,542 pheasants were released during 1956. He estimates some 500 birds survived last season’s kill and that a like amount has reproduced naturally and will furnish game for the season which opens Oct. 1 and closes Nov. 15.

25 Years Ago, 1981

• Bubble gum baseball cards have attracted millions of young people interested both in the game and the gum, but the Lewiston Fire Prevention Bureau has just acquired a new kind of card. Fire Prevention Bureau Director Robert Dionne has purchased 7,000 firemen picture cards to distribute to area schoolchildren.

• CONCORD, N.H. – State officials continued an investigation on Thursday into charges that a pesticide-capsule has killed millions of New Hampshire honey bees and is endangering part of the state’s $10.5 million apple industry. The state beekeeper’s association has asked the New Hampshire pesticide control board to ban the product, Penncap-M, which is a time-release-capsule containing methyl parathion.
