AUBURN – The John Mitchell Center at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham has received awards from The American Institute of Architects Maine and College Planning & Management magazine.

The building, designed by Harriman Associates of Auburn, received an honor award for excellence in architecture by the AIA Maine. The AIA Maine Design Awards is a biennial awards program to honor the best architectural design in the state. The John Mitchell Center was one of five projects selected to receive an excellence award from 53 entries.

The building was also selected for a project of distinction award in the 2006 Education Design Showcase published annually by the College Planning & Management magazine.

The center at the University of Southern Maine is home to USM’s School of Applied Science, Engineering, and Technology, Harriman Associates provides architecture and engineering design for education, government, commercial, retail and health care clients throughout New England from offices in Auburn and Portland and Portsmouth, N.H. The sixth-oldest design firm in the country, Harriman Associates has been building communities since 1870.
