AUGUSTA – Four area businesses were recently recognized by state officials as being among Maine’s top 10 employers for older workers.

The four area businesses receiving Maine Silver Collar Employer Awards for 2006 are:

• United Ambulance Service, Lewiston

• SeniorsPlus-Elder Independence of Maine, Lewiston

• The Home Depot, Auburn

• TD Banknorth, Lewiston

The announcement was made recently at this year’s 2006 Blaine House Conference on Aging at the Augusta Civic Center. Laura Fortman, commissioner of the Maine Department of Labor, and Sabra Burdick, deputy commissioner of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, presented the awards.

The Maine Jobs Council initiated the “Silver Collar Employer” award to recognize top employers in Maine whose policies and practices match the needs of mature employees, capturing their skills and experience, strong work ethic, flexibility and enthusiasm.

Each Silver Collar employer, whether large or small, has a demonstrated commitment to a diverse and vibrant workforce and support of its community.
