PARIS — It’s official: Oxford County has a new chief deputy sheriff.

Although Christopher Wainwright has for more than a month held the duties, the office and the parking spot of former Chief Deputy Jim Davis, who resigned Aug. 31, the promotion became official Friday.

The chief deputy sheriff is the No. 2 position in the department. In Sheriff Lloyd “Skip” Herrick’s absence, Wainwright will have all his authority, Herrick said.

Herrick said he is confident in Wainwright’s ability to do the job, and to “assist in running the agency and to meet the demands of this office and the public.”

So far, Wainwright said he has really enjoyed the job.

“I look forward to coming into work every day,” he said.

Herrick said he is waiting until after the November sheriff’s election to appoint someone to replace Wainwright in his former position as a lieutenant. Herrick is retiring at the end of the year and Wainwright is campaigning to take his seat.

Wainwright has been with the sheriff’s office for 16 years.

Davis retired under a cloud. Prior to his retirement he went on administrative leave in July while accusations that he harassed his former girlfriend were investigated.
