Bottle drive

SALEM – Members of the Salem United Methodist Church will host a community bottle drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, in Salem and surrounding communities.

The drive is being held in an effort to raise the support needed to bring the church’s long-term foundation project to completion. To donate, for bottle pick-up or for more information, call 678-2442 or 678-2877.

Garden club

FARMINGTON – The Mt. Blue Area Garden Club will meet Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Routes 2 and 4. This is a new location for the club. The speaker will be Bill Primmerman with a program on how to plan for and put on a “Plant Your Own Container Veggie Garden” workshop.

The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. with light refreshments and a social half-hour, followed by the speaker, then a short business meeting. Garden club meetings are open to the public.

Teachers to meet

NEW SHARON – Franklin County Retired Teachers will meet at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 16, at the New Sharon Methodist Church. The program will include a silent auction to raise money for scholarships and Dave Pillsbury will discuss TABOR. For lunch reservations, call 778-3495.

Volunteer meal

FARMINGTON – The Titcomb Mountain annual volunteer appreciation dinner will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15. Homemade entrees, salads and dessert will be served. Entertainment will be by Sole Expression.

Meeting on Parker

CARTHAGE – The Carthage Historical Society will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, for a potluck supper followed by a short business meeting and a program on potter Glidden Parker, former resident of Carthage.

Glidden McLellan Parker Jr. was born July 26, 1913, in Phillips. He was educated at Bates, the University of Vienna and New York College of Ceramics at Alfred, N.Y. He produced pottery for 17 years.

The pottery seen in 1950s television shows, such as “I Love Lucy,” “Make Room for Daddy” and “Perry Mason,” was made by Parker. A collection of his pottery will be on exhibit. Members are asked to bring Parker pottery to add to the display.

Parker died in New Mexico in 1980 and his remains rest in the Newman Cemetery in Carthage.

Harvest fair

WILTON – The Wilton Congregational Church will hold a Fall Harvest Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, featuring tables with baked goods, craft items, knitted scarves, dried flower arrangements, kids’ games, popcorn, a white elephant table and harvest fruits and vegetables.

At 11:30 a.m. there will be a concert by members of the Franklin County Fiddlers, with luncheon served from noon to 2 p.m. All are welcome.
