A reader with blood temperature problems expressed his “disrespect” for Kalle Oakes in a recent letter to the editor. Unlike the reader, I find Kalle Oakes to be a treasure.

His articles are thought provoking, well-written and usually have a personal insight uncommon in a sports section. He obviously loves amateur sports – high school sports in particular – and Sun Journal readers are fortunate to be the beneficiaries of his craft.

While I was at the Lisbon Greyhounds football game Saturday, I thought of Kalle’s recent article about lack of attendance at high school events. He was dead on again.

He is a good man, and unafraid to express a well-deserved, unpopular opinion. He is not running for public office. His job is to report and to make us think, and he does it well.

The Sun Journal does an outstanding job covering high school sports, and Kalle Oakes is the best.
