I am writing in response to articles written this fall regarding Maple Street Park. These stories have helped highlight the lack of public process around decision making in Lewiston, and the irresponsibility and dishonesty displayed by city officials.

When the park was removed, a city official promised it would be fully restored. This promise may have stopped local residents from chaining themselves to the swing sets before the demolition, but has not stopped them from voicing their disappointment now that the park is still not restored.

It’s been almost a year, and the park has not been returned. What does this say to the citizens of Lewiston? For me, it says promises made by city officials are worthless. Is this what city officials want residents of Lewiston to believe?

In order for residents of Lewiston to have faith in city officials, all they have to do is keep a promise they don’t deny making. All they have to do is put back playground equipment that sits quietly in the city’s garage. Is this too much to ask? Over 300 residents don’t think so. They decided to start their own public process by signing cards and presenting them to the city council on July 25, 2006, telling the city that they want Maple Street Park restored.

It’s time for residents to rise up and demand a public process. It’s time city officials are held accountable for their promises. It’s time for Maple Street Park to be restored.
