Group gives books to encourage reading

LEWISTON – Members of the Delta Kappa Gamma Mu Chapter are working on a special project with the help of the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation.

To encourage new mothers and fathers to read to their children starting at birth, the DKG organization is distributing a book by Rosemary Wells, “Read To Your Bunny,” to local pediatricians and obstetricians as well as the library at Advocates for Children.

The project is part of the Read-To-Me program sponsored by the Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Society.

The group also has been delivering new books to the maternity departments in the local hospitals so that each new mother will have a head start with the child’s early reading adventures. Enclosed in each wrapped book is information on the importance of reading.

Local organizations contributing to the success of this project are the Lisbon Rotary Club and St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.
