BRUNSWICK (AP) – Nick Tomaino caught three touchdowns to lead the Bowdoin to its first victory of the season, 23-14 over winless Bates in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Tomaino caught passes of 33, 10 and 3 yards from quarterback Oliver Kell. Nate Morrow also kicked a 34-yard field goal for Bowdoin (1-6, 1-6). Bowdoin’s Jeff Smith rushed for 55 yards and Kell completed 18 passes out of 25 attempts for 222 yards.

Visiting Bates (0-7, 0-7) scored in the first quarter on a 5-yard run by Jamie Walker, and again in the third quarter on a 3-yard run by Walker. Bates’ quarterback Brandon Colon threw 20 completions for 31 attempts and one interception.

Despite the loss, Bates gained more total yards than Bowdoin, 275 to 246.
