NORWAY – Janet Alice Hinckley, 79, of Sumner, died at the Stephens Memorial Hospital on Nov. 4.
She was born in Rockland on Dec. 5, 1926, the daughter of Frank and Gladys (Jordan) Smith and was educated in Rockland schools, graduated from the University of Maine in 1948, and from the University of Wisconsin in 1956, with a Ph.D. in biochemistry. She worked as an assistant biochemistry professor at the University of Maine from 1956 to 1967.
She enjoyed tatting rugs, gardening and was especially fond of animals. She married Edgar Hinckley at Orono, on Dec. 26, 1956.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years of Sumner; and one niece, Nettie B. Therrien, and her husband, Raymond, of Hudson Falls, N.Y.
