The schooner Eldora, 44 tons, of Milbridge, Portland for Milbridge with mixed freight, was abandoned in a sinking condition Monday morning, 50 miles N. N. of Georges Banks. Captain W. E. Francis and Seaman A. W. Kennedy, both of Milbridge were taken off by fishing schooner T. M. Nocholson, Captin Gilley, Grand Banks for Bucksport and landed here this morning. Captain Francis reported that at 8 o’clock Sunday night when 12 miles south west of Petit Manan, was struck by a terrific squall, carrying away sails, sweeping decks, staving boats and sprung a leak. Was obliged to bear off under bare poles and was exhausted from 27 hours at wheel when sighted and was taken off by the Nicholson. Eldora sank two hours later. Was 44 tones, built at Milbridge in 1891, and owned by Joel G. Gray and other of Milbridge. Not insured.

Disapproval of the transformation of the old corn canning factory on Lake Auburn Avenue into a food distribution warehouse, was voiced last night by members of the Superintending School Committee at their meeting at the ELHS Annex. Main issue of the disapproval was the possibility of lowered safety factor if the warehouse would be servicing large trucks in close proximity to Washburn School.

If the effort to create a third political party in Maine proves successful, it could set the stage for some interesting maneuvers on the state’s political scene.

Earlier this week, Edward C. Schlick of Dresden said he was planning to start collecting the 18,500 signatures necessary to get the party on the ballot. The party, said Schlick, would be the Maine Independent Voters Party.

But the question is: if an independent voter becomes a member of the Independent Party, is that voter still in fact, independent?
