AUBURN – Park Avenue Elementary School is the official name for Auburn’s newest school, which opened at the start of the academic year in September.
The Auburn School Committee unanimously approved the new name Wednesday night after students spoke about what they learned during the voting process. Over the past few months, teachers used the naming of the school to teach students about democracy and how important it is to be informed.
Students and community adults stated their preferences in a straw vote, and Park Avenue Elementary was the most popular choice, beating out three other options.
“The election was as authentic as we could get it,” said Park Avenue Principal Vickie Gaylord. She praised City Clerk Mary Lou Magno, who helped “by getting all the official things,” like voting booths and ballots.
