Yesterday was the babies own day at Auburn Grange. Babies fair and babies dark, babies fat and babies thin, but all just as pretty and sweet as could be assembled at the grange hall at East Auburn yesterday. The two o’clock car from the head of Lisbon street was literally filled to overflowing with the babies and their mamas, with fond aunties or doting grandmas to assist in keeping the little ones in order.

50 Years Ago, 1956

CONCORD, N.H. – The State Insurance Dept. said today it has approved a plan under which New Hampshire motorists will be able to buy insurance coverage protecting them and their families against damages caused by uninsured, financially irresponsible drivers. The cost will be $3 a year.

• Overlooked by many shocked mourners for St. Dom’s Arena following Sunday’s big blaze was the fortunate circumstance that not all of the largest portable floor in the world, installed at the Arena last spring, was lost to the flames. Arena general manager Rosaire Halle confirmed last night that two thirds of the floor was, and still is, stored at Roy Bros. of Knox Street.

25 Years Ago, 1981

With little protest, drinkers in Maine have paid more than $270,000 in new taxes that could help the unborn babies of drinking mothers; children whose homes are ruined by alcohol; and other victims of alcohol and drug abuse.

The money has been pouring into the state’s coffers at the rate anticipated in new legislation to raise money for drug and alcohol research, education and abuse prevention.

Since Sept. 18, drinkers in Maine have paid an extra dime for every 750-milliliter bottle of liquor, a nickel for every gallon of beer, and 15 cents for every gallon of wine they have bought.
