NEW GLOUCESTER – Several speed-zone changes will be recommended to Maine’s Department of Transportation, selectmen agreed on Monday after reviewing a report by the town’s Public Safety Committee.

The highway department will be making some corrections, as well.

A recommendation from a citizen-appointed Public Safety Committee urged the board to change the 35 mile per hour speed limit to 25 mph at Shaker Village as well as warning signs on Snow Hill Road approaching Shaker Road, and a bus warning sign at Bennett and Shaker roads.

In addition, the board agreed that the 40 mph limit be downgraded to 35 at Church Road off Route 100. A 35 mph sign off Gloucester Hill Road at Church Road is also recommended.

On Cobb’s Bridge Road, the portion from No Baloney Pony Farm to the railroad tracks should be lowered to 25 mph. And, on Cobb’s Bridge Road by the Eastgate Christian Fellowship, the speed should be lowered to 25 mph. A speed bump on Cobb’s Bridge Road near the Grange Hall Road is recommended.

At North Pownal Road, the speed should be lowered to 35 and 30 mph at the Waterman Farm segment.

A survey conducted by the Public Safety Committee ranked the worst intersections for vehicles and pedestrians in New Gloucester: worst – Upper Village cross over onto Route 100 as first, second worst- Short Bennett Road at Route 100, and tied for third were – Cobb’s Bridge Road at Intervale Road, Snow Hill Road at Bald Hill Road and Morse Road at Route 100.

Town Manager Rosemary Kulow will send a letter to Maine Department of Transportation officials to deal with the state roadway mileage requests.

Speeding vehicles have plagued the town, which relies on patrols by Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department and Maine State Police.

Residents voted not to hire part time local police two years ago. Voters disbanded the local police department in 1989.
