CANTON – Blizzard-like conditions Friday morning and icy and snow-covered roads wreaked havoc with drivers in Oxford County, keeping police busy most of the day.

“It was very nasty driving this morning,” Oxford County Sgt. Tim Holland said Friday afternoon in Peru at the scene of a rollover.

Earlier, two tractor-trailers jackknifed in Canton, one on Canton Point Road and the other on Route 140, but there were no injuries or damage. Then, at about 5:30 a.m., Holland responded to a three-car accident on Route 108 in Canton near the Dragon Cement business entrance on what’s known locally as Dragon Hill.

“It was white-out conditions, and one car slowed for it, but the other two cars behind him didn’t,” Holland said.

He said Steven Wills, 52, of Canton, was driving east in a 2004 Chevrolet pickup truck on Route 108 when he dropped down over Dragon Hill and braked. The truck was rear-ended by a 2004 Chevrolet four-door car driven by Elbert Ivy, 56, of Dixfield, causing an estimated $500 in damage to Wills’s pickup.

Ivy’s car was then struck from behind by a 1989 Ford driven by Joseph Mawhinney, 44, of Rumford, Holland said. None of the three men were injured, nor was Mawhinney’s passenger, Kevin Ronan, 49, of Rumford. Damage to Ivy’s car was estimated at $4,000, and $1,000 to Mawhinney’s Ford.

“Everybody was in a hurry to get some place this morning and didn’t realize they’ve got to slow down and maintain a safe distance between vehicles,” Holland said.

At 2:30 p.m., Holland was sent to Peru for a rollover off Dickvale Road about a mile south of Ridge Road.

Jonathan Smith, 16, of Canton, was driving a 1990s Chevrolet Corsica when he lost control on the sanded, but icy and snow-covered road coming out of a slight curve, Holland said.

The car slid before rolling into a ditch, landing upside down at the edge of trees.

Peru Fire Lt. Dan Carrier said he came across the accident and saw Smith climbing out, uninjured, and notified authorities. By about 3:15 p.m., traffic was stopped in both directions by Peru firefighters while Roland Patenaude of Roland’s Automotive of Mexico righted and pulled the car back onto the road. Holland estimated the damage at $2,000.
