FALMOUTH – Adam Packard hit a pair of key free throws in the final minute of the fourth quarter as Falmouth held of a pesky Poland team to gain a 68-63 victory in boys’ basketball.

Poland’s Tyler Merchant scored 23 of his game-high 29 points in the second half, including 13 in the fourth.

Merchant also nailed four 3-pointers in the losing effort.

Joe Douglas chipped in 15 for the Knights (0-1). Packard finished with a team-high 20 points, while Kevin Smith added 19 for Falmouth (1-0).

Rockland 72, Oak Hill 45

WALES – After jumping out to a 17-12 lead in the first quarter, Oak Hill was outscored 20-6 in the second and fell to Rockland 72-45 in boys’ basketball Saturday.

Shawn Greenier led the Black Raiders (0-1) with nine points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Josh Jillson and Kory Vanek combined for 15.

Nick Baudanza led the Fighting Tigers (1-0) with 31 points.

Maranacook 66, Med. Valley 53

WALDOBORO – Maranacook sank 29 free throws and got 29 points from junior Ryan Martin to down Medomak Valley 66-53 in boys’ basketball Saturday.

Tied at 26-26 at halftime, Maranacook used a strong defensive effort and some timely shooting to pull away from the Panthers in the second half.

Will Bardaglio chipped in with 10 points, and Mike Poulin added seven points with six assists. Collin O’Donnell led Medomak Valley with 18 points, including three 3-pointers.

Maranacook, Foxcroft tie

KENTS HILL – Justin Oliver scored a pair of goals to help Maranacook salvage a 2-2 with Foxcroft in Class B hockey action Saturday.

Oliver’s power-play goal gave the Black Bears (0-0-1) a short-lived lead in the opening period.

Foxcroft’s Henry Obray tied the game at the 11:41 mark of the first.

After Chase Hutchinson gave the Ponies (0-0-1) the lead early in the second, Oliver netted an unassisted tally on a low shot that beat Foxcroft netminder Chad Phillips (31 saves).Kyle Vorpagel stopped 24 shots for Maranacook.

Bonny Eagle 10, G-NG-Poland 6

HEBRON – Joe Mendes tallied two goals and three assists to lead Bonny Eagle in a 10-6 win over Gray-New Gloucester-Poland in Saturday night hockey.

Heading into the second period tied at 2, the Scots peppered goalie Sean Bilodeau with five goals on 21 shots to seal the win.

Cory Cormier led the Patriotic Knights with a goal and three assists while Ben Piper added two goals and an assist.

Old EL Record Falls

AUGUSTA – Senior Andrew Brodsky set a new EL team record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22:36, breaking the of 23:13 set by Lucien Ouellete in 1989.

The win qualified Brodsky for the boys’ state meet in the 50-yard freestyle. Christine Bilodeau qualified for the 50-yard freestyle on the girls’ side.

Kaila Currier and Megan Hussar each qualified in the 100-yard breaststroke Red Eddies.
