RUMFORD – Selectmen decided to wait until June to learn which option the majority of townspeople want to take regarding a public library renovation or building proposal.

Selectman Mark Belanger had suggested that a poll be taken during a special election on Jan. 9 when people will decide if they want to renovate and expand the Region 9 School of Applied Technology in Mexico.

He said taking the poll now, rather than at a binding vote in June, could save money the Library Expansion Committee designated for hiring a conceptual design for a new facility.

Town Manager Stephen Eldridge said the $15,000 slated for that design came from a betterment grant and from the Rumford Public Library Trustees.

Also, the committee has planned a series of public informational meetings early next year to explain the two proposals. One would include a major renovation and expansion to the existing facility; the second would construct a new building on a portion of the York Avenue lot that had served as the site of the razed Stephens High School.

Kathy Sutton, chairwoman of the Library Expansion Committee, said a January vote would not provide enough time for the committee to explain both options.

“We’re not going to the town for money,” she said.

Eldridge said the conceptual designs are needed before the committee can begin seeking grants for whichever proposal is chosen.

Residents will vote on both options at the annual town meeting in June.

In other matters, board Chairman Jim Rinaldo said the town has received permission from the State Fire Marshal’s Office to begin the required work on bringing the Municipal Building up to code by the end of July.

The fire marshal mandated modifications to the historic structure that will cost about $830,000 to put in place.

Residents will vote on that proposal at a special town meeting set for Jan. 11.
