NEW YORK (AP) – A 14-year-old girl was arrested on charges of throwing her baby out a Bronx apartment window, police said.

Police confirmed she was the newborn girl’s mother and said that despite her age, she was being charged as an adult with murder and manslaughter.

Police were called to the Eastchester Gardens apartments on Tuesday on a report of an unconscious baby in front of the building. Officers found a baby girl lying on a patch of grass with her umbilical cord still attached.

The baby was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Medical examiners determined the baby had been thrown from the fifth floor and died from blunt impact injuries to her head and torso, said Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman.

The girl, who weighed 7 pounds, suffered fractures and hemorrhages, Borakove said. It wasn’t clear when the baby was born.
