STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – Geary Claxton scored 21 points and the Penn State defense held Maine to the lowest point total during Ed DeChellis’ four-year tenure as the Nittany Lions rolled to a 75-42 victory Saturday.

Claxton, having his third consecutive 20-point game while playing without a cast on the hand he injured in the preseason, also chipped in seven rebounds and four assists.

Maine’s total ties the 42 points scored by Northwestern last season. Penn State (8-4) has now held three teams below 50 points.

The Nittany Lions, coming off a last-second loss to Southeastern Louisiana on Dec. 16, turned the ball over five times in the first five minutes of the game but opened up a 10-2 lead on a 3-pointer by Danny Morrissey.

The Black Bears (5-6) rallied to 15-10 before Penn State went on an 18-2 run to take a 33-12 lead on David Jackson’s driving layup with 3:09 left in the first half. Jon Sheets scored the final seven points of the half but Penn State led 35-19 at the break. The Nittany Lions outscored Maine 15-5 in the first five minutes of the second half to put the game away.

Morrissey finished with 13 points off the bench, including 3-of-4 behind the 3-point arc, and Jamelle Cornley added 10 points. Sheets finished with 10 points to lead the Black Bears.
