ESTERO, Fla. – Teddy Purcell scored a pair of goals and Brent Shepheard added three assists to lead the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team to a 6-3 win over Cornell on Saturday in the final game of the Florida College Classic.

The Black Bears took advantage of three of their five power plays and finally pulled away from the Big Red (9-4-1, 5-2-1 ECACHL) in the third period after the team’s battled in see-saw fashion for much of the game.

Purcell scored his first at 4:32 of the first period to open the scoring. Josh Soares also scored in the opening frame, which ended in a 2-2 deadlock.

Keith Johnson of Maine and Doug Krantz of Cornell traded goals early in the middle frame, but Purcell potted the game-winner at 9:34 on passes from Soares and Keenan Hopson.

Mike Lundin and Vince Laise finished off the Big Red in the third.

Goaltender Ben Bishop needed to make just 24 saves on 27 shots to earn his 12th victory of the season.
