KILLINGLY, Conn. (AP) – A Mansfield man was high and dry and under arrest Saturday.

State police said Liam McLaughlin, 18, was stopped for suspicion of driving while intoxicated about 9:30 p.m. Friday in Killingly. He ran from troopers as he was being placed under arrest. McLaughlin ended up swimming across the chilly Quinebaug River.

Authorities said a trooper jumped in after him, fearing for the suspect’s safety because of the cold water and air temperatures. Police said McClaughlin made it to the other side and ran to a nearby home where he was apprehended without incident.

The trooper, however, spent the next three hours being treated for hypothermia at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam.

McLaughlin was charged with several violations including D-W-I, interfering with a police officer, assault on a police officer and reckless endangerment.

He was ordered held on a $25,000 bond and is due in court Jan. 16.
