Dismal and dreary, New Year’s Day nevertheless signaled the opening of Maine’s ice fishing season. And while ice conditions were less than ideal, some die-hard fishers found the four inches or so covering South Pond in Greenwood sufficient for their needs. Among those angling for trout and other species in Greenwood on Monday were Mike Lee, Scott Harmon and Jason Cannuli. Harmon, of Bridgton, said he tested the ice depth before setting any traps. State fish and wildlife officers are telling people to thoroughly check ice conditions before setting off fishing, skating, skiing or snowmobiling on Maine’s lakes and ponds.
