SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) – A man accused of molesting a 7-year-old girl has committed suicide, a day after pleading not guilty.

Police found the body of Ralph Guillette Jr., at his home Wednesday morning after a family member called to express concern about him. He died from a single gunshot wound, said South Burlington Police Chief Trevor Whipple. As they arrived at his home, they heard the sound of a gunshot come from the back of the house.

A suicide note was found, but police didn’t release its contents.

Guillette, 53, was charged with molesting a girl at a day care center run by his wife, Cheryl Guillette. The alleged victim’s mother told police Friday he had used what he described as a massager on her, according to a police affidavit.

Guillette, who confessed to touching the girl inappropriately over the past eight months, also said he inappropriately touched a 5-year-old girl, according to police.

He said he knew he had a problem but feared being sent to jail if he sought treatment, the police affidavit said.

On Tuesday, after pleading not guilty to felony charges of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child, he was released.

Detective Tyler Kinney of the Chittenden Unit for Special Investigations said it does not appear any other children at the day care center were victimized. , which operated for two decades and is now closed, had been molested.
