CHELMSFORD, Mass. – Teddy Purcell scored his second goal of the game on a power play with 3:38 remaining in regulation, breaking a tie and sending the University of Maine to a 4-2 Hockey East victory over UMass- Lowell.

Keith Johnson added an empty-net goal with 30 seconds left. Josh Soares also scored for the No. 3 Black Bears (13-3-2, 6-3-1 in Hockey East).

UMass-Lowell tied the game on Jason Bergeron’s power-play goal at 8:40 of the third period. J.R. Bria gave Lowell a brief 1-0 lead before Soares knotted the game in the final minute of the opening stanza. Purcell put Maine on top 2-1 at 5:17 of the second.

Ben Bishop made 26 saves for Maine and also assisted Purcell’s game-winner.

Men’s basketball

Bates 73, Elms 56

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior forward Rob Stockwell tossed in 19 points and hauled down 14 rebounds as Bates cruised to a 73-56 win over Elms College in the opening game of the Sig Makofski Invitational at Union College.

Jimmy O’Keefe added 12 points and Pat Halloran contributed 11 as the Bobcats (9-0) opened up a 42-27 lead at the half.

The Blazers (4-5) were paced by Renato Lindmets who scored 21 points.

Women’s basketball

Thomas 78, UMMs 34

MACHIAS – Amy Miles led four Thomas College players in double figures with 19 points in the Terriers’ 78-34 women’s basketball rout of the University of Maine at Machias.

Mt. Blue product Kim Drosdik added 13 points for the Terriers, including three 3-pointers. Amanda Godley scored 15 points for Thomas. Katie St. George added 10. Sara Wells topped Machias with 15.
