Police officers and rescue personnel were busy Monday morning answering distress calls from drivers needing help due to slippery conditions.

An accident in Norway, however, was primarily caused by an unidentified driver pulling in front of another on Route 26 about noon.

Norway police officer Duffy Ellsworth said Richard K. Adam, 53, of Buckfield, was driving south on Main Street when a car pulled out from Dad’s Place store into his lane. Adam veered right into a steep hill to avoid the car and his 2005 Toyota SUV flipped onto the driver’s side.

Adam was not injured, but he could not give police a description of the offending vehicle because he said the incident passed too quickly.

Duffy said a witness backed up Adam’s story, but also could not provide the color or make of the car, which continued south.

“I would love to talk to them,” Ellsworth said. “They may not even know they caused” the crash.

Paris police helped at seven crashes between 6 and 9:30 a.m. Only one driver was taken to the local hospital for minor injuries.

“We took all seven [calls] before … 9:30,” Lt. Michael Dailey said. “We had four on Hebron Road, one on (Route) 117, and two on High Street.”

Sleet and rain made the roads slick during the morning commute.

Two Oxford County deputies also assisted at five accidents in Denmark, Buckfield and Greenwood.

Deputy Justin Brown said a 20-year-old from Otisfield went off Alcohol Mary Road in Greenwood at 6:50 a.m. Aimee Owens’ Chevrolet pickup had roughly $2,000 of front-end damage, Brown estimated.

One hour earlier, Brown had driven to a crash on North Hill Road in Buckfield where Michele Bennett, 38, of Buckfield needed help when her 1997 Ford Taurus slipped off the road. Brown said Bennett was not injured, but her car was totaled.

Also, Valeda Edwards, 53, of Paris was traveling east on Route 117 in Buckfield when her 1994 Chevrolet pickup flipped over after slipping off the road and hitting some utility poles and road signs. She was examined by Buckfield Rescue but did not go to the hospital.
