LEWISTON – Bates College couldn’t hang on to a 33-28 halftime lead and lost its first game of the season Friday night, a 68-63 setback to the Trinity Bantams at Alumni Gymnasium.

Patrick and Russ Martin scored 17 points each for Trinity (12-1), and Robert Taylor had 15 more, including 11 in the second half to lead the Bantams’ comeback.

The Bobcats (11-1) hurt themselves from the charity stripe, shooting just 14 of their 23 chances. Rob Stockwell led Bates with 17 points and 14 boards, while Zak Ray added 14 points, Bryan Wholy 13 and Chris Wilson 12 in the loss.

The Bobcats take on No. 2 Amherst today at 3 p.m. in another NESCAC matchup.

Williams 69, Bowdoin 64

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Chris Shalvoy keyed a second-half surge as Williams battled back for a 69-64 win over Bowdoin on Friday. Shalvoy finished with a game-high 20 points.

Kevin Snyder added 12 for the Ephs (7-6), and Chris Rose chipped in with 10.

Kyle Jackson led the Polar Bears (7-4) with 12 points, while a pair of players – Kevin Bradley and Andrew Hippart – added 11 each in the loss.

Middlebury 77, Colby 66

WATERVILLE – Emily Johnson scored 31 points amd added seven assists, six rebounds and six steals to power Middlebury to a 77-66 victory over Colby.

Johnson scored 21 of her points in the second half for the Panthers (9-4). She was 13 for 14 from the foul line in the second half and finished the game at 15 for 16.

Tracy Nale had 16 of her team-high 18 points in the second half for the Mules (2-9). Cappelloni added 17 points and eight rebounds.

UMF 71, Elms College 41

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Kari Simpson scored a game-high 25 points, and Erin Porter added 10 more to lead the University of Maine at Farmington to a 71-41 triumph over Elms.

Caitlyn Laflin added eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds for UMF (7-4), which raced out to a 24-6 lead to open the game.

Bates 69, Trinity 56

HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior forward Maria Kostakis scored 16 of her 20 points in the second half and added a game-high 14 rebounds, three steals and four assist to lead Bates to a 69-56 victory over Trinity.

The Bobcats (9-5) held the Bantams to 20 percent shooting and forced 15 turnovers in the first half to take a 28-18 lead at the break.

Sarah Barton scored 18 points, a recorded a game-high seven assists. Val Beckwith added 14 points, five boards, and a game-high six steals for Bates.

Bowdoin 68, Williams 58

BRUNSWICK – Eileen Flaherty scored a game-high 22 points to lead the No. 1-ranked Bowdoin women to a 68-58 win over Williams College.

The win extends the nation’s longest home-court winning streak to 75 games, and is the Polar Bears’ 14th on the season.

Nine different Bowdoin players scored at least four points. Jill Anelauskas chipped in nine points and former Dirigo standout Alexa Kaubris chipped in with five points.

Hockey
BU 6, Maine 5

ORONO – Pete MacArthur collected his first collegiate hat trick as Boston University built a 6-2 lead and hung on the post a 6-5 win over Maine in a Hockey East game Friday night.

MacArthur pulled BU (9-4-6, 6-3-5 Hockey East) into a 1-1 tie by scoring 15 seconds after Brent Shepherd had given Maine (14-4-2, 7-4-1 Hockey East) a 1-0 lead. Ryan Strait gave BU the lead for good with 44 seconds left in first period.

MacArthur scored his second and third goals 4:06 apart in the second period to swell the lead to 4-1 before Maine’s Josh Soares scored the first of his three goals.

Jason Lawrence re-established a 3-goal margin for BU later in the second period and Bryan Ewing expanded it to 6-2 early in the third period.

But the Bears rallied ferociously as Keith Johnson cut the lead to 6-3 before Soares’ got his second and third goals of the game to pull Maine within one with 3:26 remaining.

Maine stormed the BU net looking for the equalizer, but BU goalie John Curry came up with some good saves to preserve the victory.

Bowdoin 3, Williams 1

BRUNSWICK – Three different players scored to lift Bowdoin to a 3-1 victory over Williaams.

Mike Collins, Greg McConnell and Mitch Dillon all scored for the Polar Bears (7-2-3), and Nick Smith earned the win between the pipes.

David Ramsey scored the Ephs’ (3-6-1) lone goal in the first period.
