AROSA, Switzerland (AP) – Lindsey Jacobellis of the United States and Xavier Delerue of France won gold Sunday in the snowboardcross event at the Snowboarding World Championships.

Jacobellis defeated Olympic champion Tanja Frieden in the semifinals, who she lost to in the Olympic finals in Turin. Sandra Frei of Switzerland took the silver medal and Helene Olafsen of Norway won bronze.

Frieden finished in seventh.

Americans Seth Wescott, of Farmington, won silver and Nate Holland placed third in the men’s event. Wescott was the 2006 Olympic gold medalist.

According to the U.S. snowboarding Web site, U.S. coach Peter Foley said Wescott was looking for an opportunity to pass Delerue in the final, but never had an opening.

“He was looking so hard for a chance, but it never happened,” Foley said.

“It’s tough, but Seth has already proven he’s the best, and Nate is pretty stoked. He had to pull some crazy passes to get to the podium. He deserved to be on there.”
