LEWISTON – Lisbon Street reopened to traffic Tuesday afternoon, but it will remain closed to parking for several weeks.

“The only thing that was keeping it closed Tuesday was getting the traffic lights turned back on,” said Budget and Purchasing Director Norm Beauparlant. City Public Works crews had the street plowed and sanded and reopened by 3:15 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

Lisbon Street closed between Pine and Ash streets after a Dec. 20 fire damaged four buildings there. It has remained closed as crews dismantled and destroyed the buildings – the Kora, Cressey, Greely and the New England Furniture buildings.

Only one wall of the furniture building remains, and Deputy City Administrator Phil Nadeau said engineers need to make sure it can be removed without harming neighboring buildings. It’s due to be down in the next several weeks, he said.

Nadeau said Lisbon Street will remain closed to parking until the cleanup work is finished.
